Verb

Note the unfortunate coincidence of terminology here: the term verb is employed to refer to both the formal category of word class (just like adjective) and the functional category of constituents (just like subject). We are, of course, talking about the constituent verb here.

The verb is the most central element in English sentences. It is normally obligatory, cannot be moved and helps determine which other elements occur. The verb constituent is always realised by a verb phrase.
